Chapter 8

When I woke up, I was still in a bad mood. I was still angry with Ren for what he had said and what he had implied. It was partly because I hated how condescending it had been. And partly because I was scared he was right.

What if I would never learn to access my power? I had already learned that in time of need – like when Dracus had lost control and his dragon had come out – I couldn’t access my power. I had managed before when it had been a stress situation and I hadn’t thought before I’d acted.

But I hadn’t even been able to do that lately. Not that there had been the kind of situations like when Priscilla had nearly been attacked.

Classes were finally starting again, and I was glad to have a routine. I had missed training in the morning since the explosion, and with no classes, I felt like I had no ambition, no drive.

No reason to get up and get dressed, work on my studies, or anything else.

I got up early for our training session and changed into training clothes. But when I stepped out into the hallway, Theo was right there. He had been on his way to me.

“Morning,” he said.

“Am I late?” I asked.

I was sure I had set my alarm on time for our training session. Why was Theo coming to fetch me?

But he shook his head. “I just came to tell you that we’re not training today.”

“Why?” I asked frowning. I needed to get rid of this pent up energy. I needed to channel my anger. I had looked forward to getting back to training, to working myself so hard that I could barely move. “I’m not sick anymore, Theo. If I can handle rounds, I can handle training.”

“It’s not you,” Theo said. “Dracus is calling a meeting instead. He wants to talk to all of us.”

I groaned. “It’s just one meeting after the other with him, isn’t it?”

Theo chuckled. “It’s Dracus, Fiona. Why are you in such a mood?”

I pulled up my shoulders. I wasn’t going to tell him what had happened between me and Ren. He would probably say the same thing he just had. It was just Ren. And I should have known that about Ren, anyway. His moods were like another person in the house; someone we all had to take into account. But I wasn’t going to just forgive him for what he had implied about my power because he was such a moody character.

No matter what he had gone through and how he chose to deal with it, it didn’t give him the right to treat me as if I wasn’t worth my salt on the Council. They had put me in the manor for a reason.

“Come on,” Theo said, throwing a thumb over his shoulder. “Dracus is already in the dining room. I have to go wake everyone else up.”

“Good luck,” I said with a laugh. It was going to be hard getting Enrique up.
